Mozart’s Last Castle
Step back into history in this last-of-its-kind Austrian castle estate with a rich history dating over 900 years. As the birthplace of Mozart’s Requiem, Schloss Stuppach is a treasure that carries on its cultural influence.
The magnificent castle is set in a park with ornate gardens and historic trees. Its rooms are currently furnished with exquisite antiques and the property is one of the few in Lower Austria that is still privately owned.
First mentioned in 1130 and partly redesigned in the 15th and 17th centuries, the Schloss has hosted many illustrious guests beyond Mozart, including Napoleon, Franz Schubert, Pope Pius VI, Princess Isabelle von Bourbon Parma and Emperor Franz Stephan von Lothringen. The primary four-story residence includes 50 rooms featuring a cinema, library, and extensive space for entertaining.
The estate also includes historically significant buildings such as the Requiem Chapel, the Jardinière and a dungeon as well as other unique rooms that can be personalised.
Mozart’s Last Castle, or Mozarts letztes Schloss, is a historical gem and a continuing source of culture and art. In the late 1700s, Count F.A. von Walsegg commissioned his fellow Freemason W.A. Mozart to compose the score that would become the famed Requiem to honor his wife Anna Countess von Walsegg, who died at the property on Valentine’s Day 1791.
The Requiem was completed in 1792, and it was housed at the castle until it was moved to the Austrian National Library. It is one of the most valuable manuscripts in the world. The following owner of the castle was the princely house of Liechtenstein. Under the previous stewards, Schloss Stuppach became known as “Mozart’s Last Castle” — the site of a world-class attraction and event center for music performances and lectures.
The property includes independent business areas such as a club salon, an experience theater, a concert program and a castle shop. Schloss Stuppach is a unique investment that combines a rare chance to own a piece of history and create new experiences for future generations on the last “white spot” directly linked with Mozart worldwide. The “Mozart’s Last Castle” brand and the existing business fields are exceptional investments included in the Schloss Stuppach property purchase.
Schloss Stuppach stands in Gloggnitz, a small town in Lower Austria, surrounded by the highest peaks in the area. With many gothic and baroque buildings, this area has abundant history and architecture to explore.
Situated on the main rail route between Vienna and Trieste and the S6 Motorway, it’s also a convenient distance from Austria’s capital (aproxx. 70 km). Known as the “City of Music” and “City of Dreams,” beautiful Vienna has a long tradition of theater, opera, and classical music. Of course, there are also renowned museums, fine dining, and modern entertainment all year long.
All the culture and beauty of Vienna as well as the aiport can be easily reached by train or via the motorway from Gloggnitz, as can the city of Graz, which is around 118 km away.
