Beautifully restored Medici Villa outside Florence
With views along the Arno River towards Florence, Villa La Tana is arguably the best villa outside the City available for sale.
This beautiful Medici villa was bought by Grand Duke Francesco Medici I de Medici (1570) and gifted to his lover, Bianca Cappello, whom he later married. After their demise, the villa was purchased by the Santa Maria Nuova hospital. Although the property was not used as a hospital, the villa and the over 30 farmhouses and several hundred hectares of land were used for making wine, olive oil and other foods to be sold in the city.
In 1631 the property was purchased by Barone Leon Francesco Pasquale Ricasoli and in 1700 by Arch. Giulio Foggini, who is also the architect who made the tomb of Galilleo Galillei at the Basilica Santa Croce.
Later in the 19th century Arch. Poggi, (who eliminated the walls around Florence in order to prepare the city to become the capital of Italy and who also made Viale Michelangiolo), constructed the winding driveway and made a description of the villa.
The property finds itself in the Bagno a Ripoli area looking back westwards along the Arno river with a far reaching view of the valley and the city laid out below. The city centre is ca. 5 km and the airport of Florence ca. 25 km.
Florence (13km away), the cradle of the Renaissance and the capital of the Italian region of Tuscany, is famous for its architectural and historic heritage and widely regarded as one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Accredited with ‘World Heritage Site’ status and abounding with monuments, museums, churches and art galleries, Florence is a true international treasure of great historic importance.
Florence’s diminutive size means everything is very accessible, with most of the main sights lying within walking distance of one another. Escaping for some downtime is rather convenient, given the city’s proximity to the vine-covered hills of Chianti, as well as other Tuscan art towns such as Arezzo, Siena and Lucca
Stunning double-ramped staircases, frescoed ceilings, wellness area and elegant gardens with various outbuildings combined with all modern comforts make this historic estate to one of its kind.
